HC Deb 08 March 1937 vol 321 c792
48. Mr. E. Dunn

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons registered at the Barnsley Employment Exchange in the months of July, August, and September in the years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1936; and, correspondingly, the numbers for January, February and March in the same years?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

As the reply includes a table of figures, I will, if I may, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the reply:

consultation, to represent to him the views of his officers, so far as may be appropriate.

Mr. Gartland

Did Sir George Gillett and Sir Malcolm Stewart consult with the District Commissioners as to the proposal?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

This is a matter for Sir George Gillett and Sir Malcolm Stewart.

Mr. Gartland

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman unable to tell me whether these Commissioners have been consulted?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

We naturally rely on the chief Commissioner to put forward the views of his subordinates as far as it is appropriate.

Mr. James Griffiths

Are we to gather that the Commissioners have not been consulted, nor have they approved the Government's proposals which we are to discuss to-day?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The hon. Member is not entitled to assume that at all.
