HC Deb 29 June 1937 vol 325 cc1773-4
13. Mr. Day

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the Government propose to commence a further industrial survey of the depressed areas; and what machinery the Government propose to utilise for such survey?

Mr. Stanley

The industrial surveys of the regions of heavy unemployment made for the Board of Trade in 1932 have recently been supplemented, in the case of the North East Coast, South Wales and Lancashire, by further investigations under the auspices of the regional development organisations. A new survey is now proceeding in Scotland, and one is being arranged for Cumberland. In appropriate cases this work has been and is being aided by grants from the Commissioners for the Special Areas.

Mr. Day

Is it intended to make a survey of basic industries in the distressed areas?

Mr. Lawson

Will the Board of Trade receive the results of the surveys, and will they receive serious consideration with a view to making arrangements?

Mr. Stanley

Everything that we receive receives serious consideration.

Mr. Lawson

Will the surveys be sent to the Board of Trade?

Mr. Stanley

We shall certainly obtain copies of them.
