57. Mr. Harvey

asked the Minister of Health whether, in sanctioning loans or granting assistance to local authorities in connection with the provision of community centres for housing estates, he will endeavour in all cases to secure that such centres shall be so constructed as to provide adequate opportunities for the development of educational and cultural activities, including smaller rooms available for use apart from the use of the main hall?

In dealing with applications for loan sanctions it is the practice of my Department wherever practicable to urge local authorities to include accommodation of the kind to which the hon. Member refers. I will send him a copy of a report of a committee appointed by the Board of Education which the board and my Department have commended to the consideration of local authorities.
