HC Deb 21 June 1937 vol 325 cc837-8
45. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Prime Minister the number of viscounts, barons, baronets, and knights, respectively, created since the last General Election?

The Prime Minister

The following are 1he figures for which the hon. Member asks. These include those granted to residents in the Dominions, India and the Colonies. They do not include appointments to, and promotions in, the various Orders of Chivalry:

Viscounts 10
Barons 21
Baronetcies 23
Knights Bachelor 276

Mr. Shinwell

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether any of the persons concerned made contributions to the funds of the Conservative party, and, if so, will he publish the amounts? May I have an answer to that question?

Mr. Speaker

That does not arise out of the question on the Paper.

Mr. Shinwell

Do I understand the right hon. Gentleman to say that none of these persons have made such contributions?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir, I cannot say.

Captain Harold Balfour

Is this question the first fruits of the great effort of the united front?
