HC Deb 17 June 1937 vol 325 c563
70. Mr. Kelly

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether investigation has recently taken place into the condition of the pictures in the Tate Gallery; and what steps are being taken to save these pictures from ruin?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

As I stated in answer to the hon. Member on 3rd June, this is a matter in the first instance for the Trustees of the Gallery. They do not accept the implications in the question, but for some time have had under consideration a programme of repairs.

Mr. Kelly

Has any appeal been made to the right hon. and gallant Gentleman for any more money in order that those responsible may take the necessary steps for saving these pictures?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

No, Sir, I have not been approached by the trustees. If such an approach were made, we would give it careful consideration.
