HC Deb 14 June 1937 vol 325 cc21-2
42. Mr. Kelly

asked the Minister of Labour the rates of wages paid to work-people engaged in hotels in London; and the number of hours per week these men, women, and young persons are called upon to work?

Mr. E. Brown

The latest information available is contained in the report of an inquiry by my Department into Remuneration and Hours in the Catering Industry, published in 1930. The information relates to the country as a whole. Separate figures for London have not been compiled.

Mr. Kelly

Will the Minister have an investigation made as to the conditions prevailing in these hotels in London, particularly with a view to ascertaining whether anyone is asked to work without wages at all?

Mr. Brown

If the hon. Member has any information on that point, I shall be glad to look into a particular case, and, with regard to the general question, I will have a look at it.

Mr. Davidson

Is the Minister not aware that it is very difficult to give individual cases; and will not his Department institute an inquiry into this question?

Mr. Brown

I have said that I will look at it.
