HC Deb 08 June 1937 vol 324 cc1567-8
24. Mr. Leslie

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs the terms and conditions applying to the proposed scheme for transferring Scottish fishermen and their families to Vancouver?

The Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Marquess of Hartington)

Proposals for the settlement of 300 Scottish fishermen in Vancouver have reached the Oversea Settlement Board from private sources in British Columbia. The proposals are on general lines and are not worked out in detail. The Board have given the matter preliminary consideration, and, at their suggestion, the United Kingdom High Commissioner at Ottawa has been asked to discuss the proposals informally with the Canadian authorities and to ascertain their attitude towards them.

Mr. Leslie

If this scheme is carried out, will the recruiting be confined to a particular area, or will it extend to all the fishing ports in Scotland?

Marquess of Hartington

If the hon. Member considers my reply, I think he will see that matters have not reached that stage yet.

Mr. Leonard

Will the Minister bear in mind, when this matter is being further considered, the conditions of the Japanese fishermen there, if British people are being sent out to that part of the world?
