HC Deb 08 June 1937 vol 324 cc1562-3
15. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has considered the report on rural housing in Scotland; and what steps he proposes to take in view of the condemnation of the present conditions contained therein?

The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Wedderburn)

The report of the Scottish Housing Advisory Committee on Rural Housing in Scotland which was published last week, is receiving the consideration of my right hon. Friend, but he is not yet in a position to make any statement regarding its recommendations. He would like to take this opportunity of thanking the committee, and particularly the members of its rural sub-committee, for the thought and labour which they have given to the preparation of this report.

Mr. Stewart

Is it not a fact that this report has been in the hands of the Scottish Office for some little time, and does not my right hon. Friend agree that it is a very grave indictment of the present system of housing, and will he not therefore announce without delay what steps he proposes to take?

Mr. Wedderburn

I am afraid I cannot add anything at present to the answer I have given.

Mr. T. Johnston

Will the Under-Secretary convey to the Secretary of State for Scotland that, in view of the appalling conditions disclosed in that report, he might at least summon the county councils concerned to an immediate conference on the matter?

Mr. Stewart

In view of the very unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I intend to raise this matter on the Adjournment.
