HC Deb 08 June 1937 vol 324 c1559
8. Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the Ever Ready Company, Carysfort Road, Stoke Newington, do contract work for his Department; what are the articles supplied; and whether the firm is bound by the Fair Wages Clause in Government contracts?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

This company is noted on the War Office list of contractors as suppliers of certain electrical stores and holds a current contract. In common with others undertaking War Department contracts it is under obligation to observe the Fair Wages Clause.

Mr. Kelly

Is any investigation being made into the charges now made against this firm?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Yes, Sir. Investigation is always made, and I understand that the War Office have invited the unions concerned to come and discuss the matter.

Mr. Logan

If there be any truth in regard to the charges is not "Ever Ready" the wrong designation?

Mr. Adams

As this is of considerable interest to the men concerned, would it be possible for an answer to be given when the inquiry is completed if I ask another question?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Yes, Sir, I shall always be happy to answer any question.
