HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 c1412
38. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any further discussions have taken place in Zanzibar between representatives of the Government and of the Indian community on the subject of the proposed regulations affecting the trade and landholding of Indians; and whether the Government have agreed to postpone the imposition of further restrictions and proposes to find a settlement mutually satisfactory to all parties concerned?

Major Sir George Davies (Comptroller of the Household)

I have been asked to reply. As my right hon. Friend stated in his reply to the hon. Member on 5th May, no legislation is in contemplation in Zanzibar affecting Indians specially. The proposed legislation relating to the alienation of land by its owners, and relating to the settlement of debts, has been discussed by the Acting Resident with representatives of the unofficial Arab and Indian communities in Zanzibar and revised drafts are now being prepared. It is hoped that a settlement will be reached which will do justice to all legitimate interests concerned.
