HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 c1417
47. Mr. White

asked the Secretary of State for War what professional training is afforded for ex-service men at the training centres of Southampton and Leeds; what steps are taken to inform soldiers about these facilities before discharge; and how many soldiers have availed themselves of these opportunities during 1936 and this year, to date?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Sir Victor Warrender)

The Ministry of Labour training centres at Southampton and Leeds do not open until loth June, and October or November next, respectively: the last part of the question does not, therefore, arise. The trades to be taught at these centres, covering 28 separate courses, are grouped under the headings of engineering, building, furniture, vehicle-building and miscellaneous. With regard to the second part of the question, the facilities offered for training are brought to the notice of all soldiers by officers of their units, and information on the subject is also imparted by means of visits to centres and by lectures.

Sir R. Young

What is the period of training under these conditions?

Sir V. Warrender

Six months.
