HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 cc1423-4
33. Sir William Davison (for Mr. Bracken)

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he can reconsider the decision to demolish the houses numbered six and seven in Old Palace Yard, Westminster?

Sir P. Sassoon

The Lord Mayor's Memorial Fund decided on the acquisition and the clearance of this site as the most dignified and suitable setting for the Memorial to His late Majesty, King George V, and it was in respect of this scheme, in conjunction with that of playing fields, that the Lord Mayor's appeal to the public was made. I share the regret of my hon. Friend at the demolition of the houses known as numbers 6 and 7, Old Palace Yard, but their facade will be preserved, and active consideration is being given to the possibility of re-erecting it in this neighbourhood.

Sir W. Davison

Will the House of Commons have an opportunity of voting on this matter?

Sir P. Sassoon

A resolution will have to be put before the House for approval of the contribution the Government will be making to the scheme.

Mr. G. Strauss

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is considerable opposition in London to the proposed destruction of these fine old houses?

Sir P. Sassoon

I am aware of that, but, as I say, it is hoped that the facade, which is the essential part, will be preserved.
