HC Deb 02 June 1937 vol 324 c1012
56. Colonel Ropner

asked the Minister of Transport whether he can now make any statement in regard to Selby Bridge?

Mr. Burgin

I propose shortly to serve notice upon the county councils of the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire of my intention to make an Order under Sub-section (3) of Section r of the Trunk Roads Act declaring the route of a by-pass to the south of Selby to be a trunk road. Before making the Order I shall cause a local inquiry to be held.

Colonel Ropner

Can the Minister say what is the nature of the inquiry which has still to be made, and can he give any indication as to when work may be started on the new bridge?

Mr. Burgin

Whenever required by the county councils concerned, a public inquiry has to be held. Clearly a public inquiry is necessary in this case as the interests affected include a great many, and it is not possible, with a public inquiry of that kind, to give an indication of the date at which work will be started.

Sir Frank Sanderson

Is my right hon. Friend aware that it is 10 years since I raised this question in the House?
