HC Deb 21 July 1937 vol 326 cc2206-7
66. Mr. Frankel

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a large number of leading business and transport employers in London are willing to join in a conference to consider staggering of business hours with a view to relieving traffic congestion; and whether, in view of his publicly expressed willingness to consider such a conference, he can inform the House what progress in this direction has been made?

Mr. Burgin

I have had some discussion on this subject with the London Passenger Transport Board, but I have not yet been approached by any other business or transport employers. I shall be glad to discuss the subject with any group of employers interested. There is much preliminary work to be carried out before any general conference would be useful.

Mr. Frankel

In view of that reply, will the Minister take advantage of the Recess to call such a conference, if the request is made by employers and employés?

Mr. Burgin

The whole matter is having very active consideration, but I think the experience of every hon. Member will be that if a conference is to serve any useful purpose there must be preliminary work before the conference meets and no difficulty arise when the conference does meet.

Mr. Frankel

I merely wished to ask the Minister whether he would take advantage of the Recess period in order to pursue the calling of such a conference.
