HC Deb 21 July 1937 vol 326 c2202
54. Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why true European descent is now insisted upon for police probationers in the Crown Colonies, Protectorates and Mandated Territories, other than Ceylon; why such a rule does not apply to Ceylon; and whether he has considered the effect it will have in arousing discontent in territories such as Jamaica and Malaya where there is a loyal and highly educated coloured population?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

The condition to which the hon. Member refers applies only to candidates who are recruited for the Colonial Police Service through the selection machinery in this country. Police appointments, like other Civil Service appointments, in all Dependencies are open to suitable candidates drawn from the local population.
