HC Deb 21 July 1937 vol 326 cc2193-4
36. Mr. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is yet in a position to say how far the effort being made by the administration of the Aden Protectorate, designed to secure the co-operation of the sultans, sheikhs, and chiefs in the suppression of the importation of slaves, has succeeded?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Agreements designed to prevent the introduction of slaves into their territories have now been subscribed to by all the leading chiefs in the Protectorate. Other chiefs have been invited to follow this example. The Sultan of Shihr and Mukalla and the Kathiri Sultan have agreed to the abolition of the sale of slaves at fairs and the granting of freedom to any slave upon his demanding it. The Sultan of Lahej has stated that the sale of slaves at markets in his territory has never been the custom and has given an assurance that such transactions will never take place.
