HC Deb 19 July 1937 vol 326 c1780
47. Sir W. Davison

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make it a general rule that, in the case of the sale of landed property belonging to the State, consideration will always be given to the immediate purpose for which the property is being acquired, especially when the site to be sold adjoins or is in the immediate vicinity of other State property?

The Prime Minister

I do not think it would be desirable to lay down any general rules of the character suggested by my hon. Friend. But he may rest assured that in any cases in which Government property for disposal is in the immediate vicinity of other property in their possession, appropriate steps are taken to ensure that such property is sold subject to conditions which would prevent it from being developed in a manner detrimental to the Government's interests.

Sir W. Davison

Can my right hon. Friend say whether considerations of this kind will be before the Government in connection with the offer of the site immediately opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum which we understand is to be sold by sealed tender to the highest bidder?

The Prime Minister

Yes, Sir, certainly.

Mr. Bellenger

In the case just mentioned, will restrictions be placed on the user of the site?

The Prime Minister

Yes, Sir.
