HC Deb 05 July 1937 vol 326 cc2-3
2. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India how many proceedings have been taken recently against members of the All-India Congress Committee, and the nature of their alleged offences?

Lord Stanley

I have received no information of any such proceedings.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the Under-Secretary make an investigation in respect of this matter?

Lord Stanley

I regret that I can make no inquiries. Any such proceedings would be taken at the discretion of the Provincial Governments, and therefore, in view of the Prime Minister's statement, I cannot undertake to make inquiries.

Mr. Sorensen

Are we to take it that we shall never get any information with regard to proceedings against members of the All-India Congress Committee?

Lord Stanley

Not in cases where it is a provincial matter, where authority has been given to the Provincial Governments.

Mr. Macquisten

Have we not given home rule to India? Why should we now interfere?
