HC Deb 25 February 1937 vol 320 cc2188-9
73. Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will consider the advisability of seeking the co-operation of all road users and administrative authorities with a view to the imposition of a 30-miles-per-hour speed limit within a mile radius of all schools?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Captain Austin Hudson)

Section I of the Road Traffic Act, 1934, defines the conditions in which the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit is to be applied. My right hon. Friend is always ready to have regard to the proximity of schools in carrying out his duties.

Captain Strickland

Will my hon. and gallant Friend agree that in the case of children any speed may be dangerous, and that the solution lies in the adoption of properly protected accesses to the roads concerned?

Captain Hudson

I agree that the imposition of the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit alone may not be the best way to deal with particular danger spots.
