HC Deb 24 February 1937 vol 320 c1988
46. Captain Arthur Evans

asked the Prime Minister whether in view of the altered circumstances and the consequent new form of the Coronation Oath to be taken in conformity with the Statute of Westminster, His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom will consult with His Majesty's Governments in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa to ascertain whether they would welcome an opportunity of contributing to the Civil List shortly to be considered by this House?

Tile Prime Minister

No, Sir. I should not regard it as proper that His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom should approach His Majesty's Governments in the Dominions in the manner suggested.

Captain Evans

While thanking the Prime Minister for that reply, may I ask him, with great respect, whether he does not feel that the people in the Dominions would welcome an opportunity of contributing financially to the maintenance of the Monarchy; and whether any conversations of a fat not al or informal character have taken place on this matter in the last few years between His Majesty's Government here and His Majesty's Government in the Dominions?

The Prime Minister

I should require notice of the second part of the question, and with regard to the first part the matter is one for the Dominions and not for me.
