HC Deb 15 February 1937 vol 320 cc836-7
45. Mr. Dalton

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that there is increasing concern and indignation in the Special Areas at the prolonged delay in the production of the new Special Areas Bill; and whether he can now state when the Bill will be introduced?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Baldwin)

I can at present add nothing to the answer which I gave on Thursday last in reply to a question by the hon. Member for Spennymoor (Mr. Batey).

Mr. Dalton

Can the Prime Minister give us any assurance at all that this Bill will shortly be introduced? Does he not realise that the position in these areas is getting worse and worse, while the Government are doing nothing?

The Prime Minister

We are just as anxious as the hon. Member to introduce the Bill, and I told the hon. Member for Spennymoor (Mr. Batey) only on Thursday that I hoped to be in a better position to say when the Bill would be introduced if the question were repeated this week. I am not in that position on Monday. I have nothing more to add.

Mr. G. Griffiths

Is there any truth in the Press reports that the Cabinet are falling out about this Bill?
