HC Deb 11 February 1937 vol 320 cc578-9
56. Mr. Kelly

asked the Minister of Health whether the arbitration proceedings have been concluded to determine the price to be paid by the Leeds Corporation for 325 acres of land, for purposes of housing, owned by the Middleton Estate and Colliery Company and formerly wholly or partly occupied by the Leeds steelworks which has since been dismantled; what claims were put forward by the vendors and by the corporation, and what was the arbiter's award; what, if any, part of the cost of clearing the site has been borne out of municipal or national funds; and for how long the premises or the site have ceased to be on the valuation roll as a rate-revenue producing subject?

Sir K. Wood

The arbitration hearing to determine the price to be paid by the Leeds Corporation for a site of 325 acres which they are acquiring from the Middleton Estate and Colliery Company for the purposes of housing has been completed but the arbitrator has not yet issued his award. I am informed that no part of this site was occupied by the Leeds steelworks.

Mr. Kelly

Will the right hon. Gentleman answer the last part of the question, whether any part of the cost of clearing the site was borne by the municipality or out of national funds?

Sir K. Wood

I should be glad if the hon. Member would see me on this matter, because I think there is a little misunderstanding as far as the site is concerned. As far as we can tell in the Department, the particular site the hon. Member has in mind is not the site dealt with in the question.
