HC Deb 21 December 1937 vol 330 cc1759-60
23. Colonel Ponsonby

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has had any communications with the Governments of His Majesty's other Dominions regarding the position of the Irish Free State, in view of the fact that the new constitution of that State, which comes into force on 29th December, apparently creates a Republic; and has he any statement to make?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

We are in communication with the other Dominion Governments on certain aspects of this question. In the meantime I cannot make any statement.

Mr. Annesley Somerville

May I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman can give an assurance that the relations between the Crown and the Irish Free State will not be affected in any way by the new constitution?

Mr. MacDonald

I have said in my answer that I cannot make any statement in regard to it.
