HC Deb 21 December 1937 vol 330 c1782
22. Mr. A. Somerville (for Sir Patrick Harmon)

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether, in view of the fact that almost all vacant farms in the Middle West provinces of the Dominion of Canada are being acquired by alien settlers, any representations have been made to the Government of that Dominion relating to the settlement of immigrants of British nationality in the Dominion?

Mr. M. MacDonald

I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by such representations at the present time. As I have already informed the House, the discussions which took place at the time of the Imperial Conference with the Canadian Minister concerned indicated that the Canadian Government felt that the time had not arrived when they were in a position to co-operate with the United Kingdom Government in the resumption of Government-assisted migration.
