HC Deb 16 December 1937 vol 330 cc1325-6
49 Mr. Wakefield

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education what is the percentage of schools in which the Highway Code is taught; and whether, in view of the number of road accidents caused by ignorance of the code, he is prepared to take steps to ensure that it is taught in all schools?

Mr. Lindsay

No precise information is available as to the percentage of schools in which the Highway Code is taught. A great many local education authorities have, however, already included definite lessons on road safety in the curriculum of the schools in their areas and the matter, as my hon. Friend will see from Circular 1455 of which I am sending him a copy, is being kept before the attention of local authorities by the Board. The form and content of the instruction given in the subject are primarily matters for the discretion of the local education authorities and teachers in the light of local circumstances and the age and capacity of the children.
