HC Deb 14 December 1937 vol 330 cc964-5
25. Mr. A. Jenkins (for Mr. James Griffiths)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in furtherance of the plans for the storage of food in preparation for a national emergency, consideration is being given to the development of the food canning industry in this country; and whether he will cause an investigation to be made into the suitability of South-West Wales for this development where there is a large area of land suitable for food production in close proximity to the centre of the tinplate industry?

Mr. Stanley

The creation of a reserve of canned goods as a part of a food storage scheme is receiving careful consideration. I should add, however, that I am not sure that this proposal, if adopted, would foster a development of the industry in the manner the hon. Member suggests.
