HC Deb 27 April 1937 vol 323 cc147-8
1. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will take steps during the forthcoming trade negotiations to carry out the promise of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs that a policy would be pursued by political appeasement and economic collaboration?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Runciman)

I do not know which trade negotiations the hon. Member has in mind, but I need hardly say that it is the constant aim of His Majesty's Government's policy in all spheres to attain the greatest possible measure of political appeasement and economic collaboration.

Mr. Smith

Will the President of the Board of Trade make a statement to the world that this country is prepared to enter into trade negotiations with any country that will have for its object the bringing about of economic disarmament?

Mr. Runciman

On this subject the outside world has been quite capable of forming its own opinion.

Mr. Shinwell

Does the right hon. Gentleman propose to make a statement shortly on the results of his conversations with the Belgian Prime Minister?

Mr. Runciman

No, Sir, not at present.
