HC Deb 19 April 1937 vol 322 cc1421-2
36. Mr. Chorlton

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether internal-combustion engines have been considered as the propulsive power for aircraft carriers by reason of lighter weight and no chimneys being required, also twin hulls with shallower draft as suitable for the Mediterranean?

Sir S. Hoare

The use of internal-combustion engines for propelling aircraft carriers would be impracticable on account of the high horse-power required. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
