§ Mr. RuncimanThe retail prices of foodstuffs are under constant observation 785 both by the Food Council and the Government, and, in so far as Government action to safeguard the interests of consumers is at any time necessary and practicable, it will be taken.
§ Mr. ShinwellIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that in recent weeks there has been a rapid increase, and does he propose to advise the Food Council to take prompt action in the matter?
§ Mr. RuncimanThe two most important items in the Food Council's returns are wheat and tea, and both of these are subject to world markets, over which we have no control.
§ Mr. ShinwellAs regards other commodities not so subject to world prices, does the right hon. Gentleman propose to take any action?
