HC Deb 08 April 1937 vol 322 c322
5. Mr. Kelly

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will consider changing the method of remunerating branch managers and not have their payment depend on the number of people unemployed and signing at the particular place where the branch manager is situate?

Mr. E. Brown

The system of remuneration of branch managers was recently raised in agreement with the Staff Associations. I see no reason for suggesting the withdrawal of the additional payments which are in certain circumstances made when the volume of work is greater at a particular office than was anticipated.

Mr. Kelly

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is nothing in this question which asks him to reduce the remuneration but simply to increase the remuneration; and will he see that those who are retained in the service shall not lose any remuneration by reason of doing their work effectively?

Mr. Brown

The hon. Member puts it one way and I put it another. What we do is to pay the worker more.
