HC Deb 06 April 1937 vol 322 c17
31. Major Hills

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air how many men and how many women, respectively, are employed in the following grades in the Air Ministry, giving the figures, separately, for men and women in each grade: staff clerk grade, clerical class, higher grade, and clerical class, basic grade?

Sir P. Sassoon

The actual figures are as follow: staff clerk grade, 66 men, no women; higher grade clerical class, 183 men, 8 women; basic grade clerical class, 773 men, 213 women. These figures, however, require much qualification before any comparison can be drawn. The two categories differ very widely in their length of service and seniority for promotion. Of the men, all the staff officers and most of the higher clerical officers are pre-War entrants. Of the women, only two are pre-War entrants, while a very large proportion are of relatively recent entry.
