HC Deb 29 October 1936 vol 316 c21
Mr. STEPHEN

(by Private Notice) asked the Under-Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that two families at 80, Bellgrove Street, Glasgow, were ordered out of their homes by the Master of Works of Glasgow Corporation, because the roof had fallen in as a result of the storm on Monday, 26th October, and the houses were in a dangerous condition; that the tenants had paid forehanded rent, and that the Glasgow Corporation Housing Committee has refused to provide even temporary housing accommodation for the tenants ordered out who are unable to pay double rent and were homeless; and what steps he intends to take in this matter and in other similar cases in the city of Glasgow?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I am informed that the families have now returned to the houses referred to. I am making inquiries into the circumstances in which the houses had to be vacated, and the results will be communicated to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Mr. STEPHEN

Will the Under-Secretary make special inquiries, as the statement that has been made to him is not true that both the tenants have returned to the houses? The Master of Works has certified these houses as dangerous. Will the Under-Secretary give an assurance that these people will not be compelled to live in a house which is dangerous because the corporation cannot do their duty?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

The hon. Member will apreciate that I have had only a few hours' notice to make inquiries. I have in that time been in touch with the Corporation of Glasgow, and the information I have received I have passed on to the hon. Member. I am pursuing my inquiries, and the hon. Member will be informed as to the result.
