HC Deb 29 October 1936 vol 316 cc17-8
32. Mr. LYONS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air whether any further progress has been made in the establishment of a central airport for London?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for AIR (Sir Philip Sassoon)

I understand that negotiations between the different authorities concerned in the proposed establishment of an airport at Fairlop, Essex, are still actively proceeding. My hon. and learned Friend will, of course, appreciate that negotiations regarding an enterprise of this magnitude are naturally intricate.

Mr. LYONS

Can my right hon. Friend tell me, in view of the time that has been taken in considering this subject, whether he knows now that any reasonable facilities exist for getting from Central London to this site, which is still under consideration?

Sir P. SASSOON

I believe that negotiations have taken place between the Council and the London Passenger Transport Board, and it is suggested that there should be a service in communication with the projected underground railway half a mile away, so as to extend to all parts of London.

Mr. LYONS

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that answer, may I ask whether, if the site is really settled, the Department will satisfy itself that there are reasonable facilities for getting from Central London to this spot?
