4. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the result of the proposals made by the British Government to the United States and Japanese Governments concerning the renewal of Article XIX of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922?

Mr. EDEN

The United States and Japanese Governments were approached in September last with proposals for the renewal of Article XIX of the Washington Naval Treaty. Until the replies of both Governments have been received and considered by His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, I am not in a position to make any statement.

Has a reply been received from either of the parties?

Yes Sir.
