HC Deb 16 November 1936 vol 317 cc1313-4
20. Mr. DREWE

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the anxiety about our wheat supply, he will recommend the extension of the 6,000,000 quarters of wheat on which full quota payment is paid under the Wheat Quota Act?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

I assume that the anxiety to which my hon. Friend refers is as to the supply of wheat in time of war, and I would remind him that the whole question of appropriate measures to secure the food supply of this country in its defence aspect is at present under review by the Committee of Imperial Defence.

Mr. DREWE

Can the Minister say when we are likely to get any definite answer as a result of this review, which has been going on for some time?

Mr. MORRISON

I cannot name a date, but I assure my hon. Friend that there will be no avoidable delay.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that already wheat is being grown on land that is totally unsuitable for the purpose?

Mr. MORRISON

No, Sir; I am not aware that that is so.

Mr. PETHERICK

Is it not better to grow wheat on such land in order that consumers may have some source of wheat?
