HC Deb 16 November 1936 vol 317 cc1330-1
59. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the Home Secretary whether it is the practice of the police to test the accuracy of the speedometers of cars the drivers of which it is proposed to summon for exceeding the speed limit?

Mr. LLOYD

No, Sir. It is no part of the duty of the police to check the accuracy of speedometers on private cars.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is not the hon. Gentleman aware that it is part of the duty of the police to take all possible steps to see that innocent persons are not found guilty?

Mr. HOLDSWORTH

Is it possible for anyone who is supposed to have committed an offence to test the speedometers of the police cars?

Mr. LLOYD

It is open to persons to bring these matters before the courts.
