HC Deb 16 November 1936 vol 317 c1311
9. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs particulars of the number of cases in which His Majesty's Ambassador in Paris has approached the French authorities during the previous three years, for the purpose of securing the release of British subjects who had enlisted in the French Foreign Legion on terms contrary to the French regulations regarding age, etc.; and the result of these representations?

Mr. EDEN

During the last three years, His Majesty's Ambassador in Paris has twice approached the French authorities on behalf of British subjects who were alleged to have enlisted in the French Foreign Legion on terms contrary to the French regulations, once in April, 1935, on behalf of a British subject who was stated to be physically unfit, and once in November, 1935, on behalf of a British subject who was stated to have enlisted under the age of 20 years, without the consent of his parents. Both these individuals were subsequently released from their contracts.
