HC Deb 10 November 1936 vol 317 cc686-7
40. Mr. MAXTON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps have been taken to deal with the problem of overcrowding in Scotland since the survey revealed that one-fourth of the population was living in overcrowded conditions?

Mr. ELLIOT

Close touch is being maintained with local authorities to secure the maximum progress in the provision of the additional accommodation required to put an end to overcrowding. This was, as the House will remember, the constant preoccupation of the late Secretary of State for Scotland, and my intention is to take all possible steps to achieve that object.

Mr. MAXTON

Will the report show that you are keeping in close touch with the local authorities?

Mr. ELLIOT

The local authorities are proceeding vigorously with the necessary steps. I am afraid I cannot say any more at present, having only recently entered upon my present position.
