HC Deb 10 November 1936 vol 317 cc668-9
16. Mr. LOUIS SMITH

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the import of Coronation book-marks of German manufacture without any indication of the source of origin; and whether he will instruct his officials to investigate this and all similar evasions of the law?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

There is no general requirement that imported goods must bear an indication of origin at the time of their importation. By Order made under the Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, however, imported ribbons and certain classes of goods made from ribbons must bear an indication of origin on sale or exposure for sale in the United Kingdom. If my hon. Friend can furnish me with particulars of any apparent contravention of this Order, I will gladly look into the matter.

Mr. SMITH

Will my right hon. Friend, on receipt of such evidence as I am able to give him in this instance, perhaps in the first place consult the appropriate industry or branch of industry and then consider whether it would be desirable to ask this House to give him additional powers restricting the flow of these unwelcome imports?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Yes, I will give that matter further consideration.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Is not that merely locking the stable door after the horse is stolen?
