HC Deb 05 November 1936 vol 317 c228
36. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Health whether he can furnish an estimate of the number of houses in England and Wales on the 31st March each year since the date of the last census?

Sir K. WOOD

The number of structurally separate dwellings in England and Wales at the census of 1931 was 9,400,000. I will send my hon. Friend a copy of the half-yearly publication on housing, Table II of which shows the number of houses built in each half-year since the census. I regret that I have no complete information in regard to the number of houses demolished during this period.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Will my right hon. Friend give an approximate estimate of the total of the demolitions?

Sir K. WOOD

Perhaps my hon. Friend will consult me on that.

Mr. THORNE

Will the information give the number of houses that have been built for sale and the number that has been built to let?

Sir K. WOOD

I should hesitate to say exactly the impression my hon. Friend will receive from these figures. If there is any further information I can supply I shall be glad to do so.
