Mr. DAVID ADAMSasked the Minister of Health how many local authorities in England and Wales have made application for Exchequer grants-in-aid of accommodation to be provided, otherwise than in blocks of flats on expensive sites, for the abatement of overcrowding under the terms of Section 28 of the Housing Act, 1935; and also the number and amount of the grants approved by him under that section up to the end of September, 1936?
§ Sir K. WOODI assume that the hon. Member has in mind Section 32 of the Housing Act, 1935. One hundred and sixteen local authorities have made preliminary inquiries about subsidy under that Section. The great majority of these inquiries have not yet been accompanied by specific details. Grants of £5 per annum have been approved in respect of 374 houses, of £4 per annum in respect of 330 houses, and of £2 in respect of 82 houses—all these grants being for 20 years. As soon as specific information is received on other cases I shall be ready to deal with them.
Mr. ADAMSIs the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that a reduction in the possible amount of the grant to £5 is fair and reasonable?
