HC Deb 20 May 1936 vol 312 cc1196-7
63. Colonel ROPNER

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the recent discussion between the Ministry of Transport and representatives of the East Riding County Council, he is in a position to make any statement with regard to a proposed new bridge across the River Ouse at Selby?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

As the East Riding County Council have already been informed, I am prepared to consider an application for a grant at the rate of 85 per cent. towards so much of the Selby bridge scheme as lies within the East Riding. So far no such application has been received from the county council.

Colonel ROPNER

Is the Minister aware that negotiations for the abolition of this toll bridge have been going on for many years, and can he not do something to bring to an end the obstructive policy of the East Riding County Council?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I am aware that negotiations have been going on for a number of years, and I am happy to say that I have offered them 85 per cent. of the cost. I cannot compel the county council to make an application on that basis, but perhaps the hon. and gallant Member will exercise any influence he has with them.

Mr. MUFF

Is the right hon. Gentleman proposing to make a similar grant of 85 per cent. to the West Riding County Council?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

At the appropriate rate.

Mr. WOODS

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that this bridge is quite safe for traffic?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I shall require notice of that question.

Mr. MUFF

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what is the appropriate rate for the West Riding County Council?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Yes, if the hon. Member will put that question down.
