HC Deb 19 May 1936 vol 312 cc978-9
2. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, what has been the result of the correspondence passing between his Department and the Dominions who had agreed to pass legislation on similar lines to that contained in Part I of the Cinematograph Act, 1927?

Mr. M. MacDONALD

There has been no question of specific agreement on the part of any of the Dominions to legislate on the lines of Part I of the Cinematograph Act, 1927. I understand, however, that legislation on similar lines has been passed in New Zealand.

Mr. DAY

What has been the result of the inquiries of the right hon. Gentleman's Department, which were promised some time ago, of Dominions which have agreed to pass legislation on these lines?

Mr. MacDONALD

The result is contained in the latter part of my answer.

Mr. DAY

May I point out that the latter part refers only to New Zealand, whereas a previous answer given in the House referred to New Zealand and Canada, and stated that the other Dominions had promised to introduce legislation on these lines?

Mr. MacDONALD

No promise was given at any time to legislate on these lines. I think the previous answer to which the hon. Gentleman refers was concerned with another part of the Cinematograph Act, 1927.

Mr. DAY

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries?
