HC Deb 18 May 1936 vol 312 cc828-9
51. Mr. MATHERS

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that three women have been murdered in Soho within seven months; that no arrest has been made in any of these cases; that, because of these occurrences, women in Soho go in fear of their lives; and whether he will assure the House that the police are doing everything possible to bring to justice whoever is responsible for these crimes?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

All possible steps are being taken and will continue to be taken to trace any persons who may be responsible for the deaths of the women referred to.

Mr. MATHERS

Has the Home Secretary observed the ugly words, including "blackmail," which have arisen out of these incidents, and does he not think there is a case for a searching investigation into the whole circumstances in connection with these occurrences?

Mr. LLOYD

The most searching investigation is now in progress. While I appreciate the hon. Member's anxiety, I would deprecate any suggestions which are liable to create an exaggerated impression of the situation or arouse unnecessary alarm.

Sir C. CAYZER

Has any deportation taken place as the result of the police inquiries?

Mr. LLOYD

I think not, although I should not like to make a categorical statement without notice.

Mr. GALLACHER

In view of the serious character of the crimes committed in Soho, will the hon. Gentleman arrange for the withdrawal of special police from political headquarters and the transference of them to Soho?
