HC Deb 18 May 1936 vol 312 cc807-8
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India what censorship of Press messages is now in force in India?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)

There is no form of censorship of Press messages in India other than that derived from the Indian Telegraph Act and the Rules framed under it. The standing instructions of the Government of India are that these powers will not normally be exercised in the case of messages from correspondents to reputable agencies and newspapers overseas.

Mr. DAY

When the hon. Gentleman says "not normally exercised," does that mean that Press messages are allowed to come through by that service uncensored?

Mr. BUTLER

The normal practice is to allow uncensored Press messages to come through.
