28. Lieut.-Commander FLETCHER (for Mr. EDE)

asked the President of the Board of Education how many secondary school places per 1,000 of the population are provided for boys and girls, respectively, in the county borough of South Shields; and what is the percentage of special and free places to the total number of pupils of each sex?

Mr. STANLEY

On 1st October, 1935, the number of pupils in grant-aided secondary schools in South Shields was 616 boys and 273 girls, being 5.5 and 2.4 respectively per thousand of the population in July, 1935, as estimated by the Registrar-General. The percentage of these pupils who were receiving remission of fee (either in whole or in part) was, boys 33.3, girls 46.2.

asked the President of the Board of Education, how many local education authorities award special places in secondary schools to the extent of 100 per cent. of the admissions?

The number of such authorities is 36.
