HC Deb 14 May 1936 vol 312 cc537-8
16. Mr. WILSON

asked the Home Secretary whether the attention of the police has been called to a recent judgment of the Lord Chief Justice to the effect that it is their duty to be present at meetings when there is good reason to think that a breach of the peace may occur; and whether the police undertake the duty of determining whether such a breach is likely to occur, or what notice they require to be given to them by the promoters?

Sir J. SIMON

Police authorities understand their duty as laid down in the judgment referred to, and do their best to discharge it. Their action in any given case depends upon circumstances. Notice of meetings is frequently given to the Police, but there is no general requirement as to the giving of previous notice.
