HC Deb 06 May 1936 vol 311 cc1703-4
62. Mr. EDE

asked the President of the Board of Trade when he proposes to take action on the findings of the court of inquiry into the loss of the steamship "La Crescenta"; and what action he proposes to take?

Dr. BURGIN

The Director of Public Prosecutions informs me that summonses have been issued against Mr. Sydney Graham and Mr. Ralph Henry Holland to answer a charge that they were parties to sending the steamship "La Crescenta" to sea in such an unseaworthy state that the life of persons was likely to be thereby endangered, contrary to Section 457 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894. These summonses are returnable at the Mansion House Justice Room on 26th May, 1936.

Mr. SHINWELL

May I ask whether one of the accused who went to America is now returning to this country?

Dr. BURGIN

I have seen Press reports that he is on his way here, and I have no reason to believe that he will not present himself on the date of the return of the summons?
