HC Deb 06 May 1936 vol 311 c1689
25. Mr. LENNOX-BOYD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether there are any restrictions imposed on the acquisition of land by white settlers in Tanganyika?

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

In certain Provinces land is not alienated to non-natives for agricultural or pastoral purposes unless Government is satisfied that the applicants are in command of sufficient capital to undertake operations on an adequate scale. Elsewhere there are no general restrictions, subject to land being available for alienation (that is, not being required for native needs) and to compliance with the provisions of the Land Ordinance.

Mr. LENNOX-BOYD

Can my right hon. Friend say whether when alienation is allowed any distinction is made between potential German or British settlers?

Mr. THOMAS

No, the answer is that in all mandated territories there is no discrimination, nor is there any discrimination in the free use of the exports from those particular countries.
