HC Deb 06 May 1936 vol 311 cc1695-6
43. Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has in contemplation any schemes for agricultural development in the county of Durham as a means of adding to the number of persons in employment?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

I am not clear what type of schemes for agricultural development the hon. Member has in mind. So far as small holdings are concerned a number of schemes have been promoted recently by the Durham County Council under the Small Holdings Acts, in co-operation with the Commissioner for the Special Areas who has specific power to provide additional assistance towards the provision of small holdings in those areas.

44. Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many persons are employed in all departments of agriculture in the county of Durham?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

The number of workers (excluding the occupier, his wife and domestic servants) on agricultural holdings exceeding one acre in extent in the county of Durham, as returned on 4th June, 1935, was 9,042.
